After a brief and unsuccessful attempt at business, he moved through social work and eventually settled into a steady job with the Railway Audit department, writing prolifically alongside it. He lived in Delhi, Ajmer, and finally Karachi, and was also known in literary circles as Qaisi Ajmeri. Though he started out as a poet, he found lasting recognition writing novels and short stories, eventually authoring more than a hundred works of Urdu fiction across social, cultural, and historical themes.
